Safety Rest Area ADA sidewalk upgrades

Safety Rest Area ADA sidewalk upgrades

PILLAR was contracted to design upgrades to parking and sidewalk sections in 13 Virginia Safety Rest Areas to be in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). The designs included compliant parking access isles and pathways to the buildings and designated shelters which resulted in moving existing parking spaces and replacing curb ramps and sidewalks with compliant widths, slopes and detectable warning strips. PILLAR performed topographic and planimetric surveys to obtain existing features and terrain elevations so to properly design to ADA standards.

Truck Safety Rest Area Stormwater Basin Repair

PILLAR was hired by the Contractor performing maintenance and upkeep of safety rest area to design repairs to the stormwater detention basin. The existing basin was not functioning as originally design and had fallen into disrepair. Sinkholes had formed and side slope and floor erosion prohibited the structure from operating as intended. Pillar designed corrective measures to address the causes of its non-functioning and prevent recurrence. This included topographic survey and location survey of the existing basin.

Elk Creek Landslide Stabilization

Through our annual contract with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals & Energy (DMME) PILLAR designed slope stabilization repair to a landslide area at the mouth of an abandoned mine. Rated as a Priority 1 project due to spoil material entering Upper Elk Creek thereby constricting flow and causing flooding damage to nearby private property and residences. Design elements dealt with limited site access, working alongside and within a stream, embankment armoring, and soil nailing.

Gravity Retaining Wall

For the I-81 Exit 150 interchange reconfiguration project, PILLAR designed the large retaining wall block system located on the northwest corner of the roundabout. After evaluating several different large retaining wall block systems, we settled on using the ReCon product. Our work also included obtaining permission from VDOT to use this product by addressing their maintenance concerns.
